What is Nitrogen Rejection?
In natural gas
processing, the process of Nitrogen Rejection
removes nitrogen, an impurity from a gas by liquefaction and
regasification of the natural gas stream.
For larger applications, cyrogenic gas
processing is the standard. In this process, a system of compression and heat exchangers brings the temperature of the gas to a point where the methane is liquified and the nitrogen remains in a gaseous state
as nitrogen has a lower boiling point than CH4 (natural gas or methane).
For smaller volumes of natural gas, a system utilizing Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is
the more typical method of removing nitrogen. With PSA, the methane in the gas
is "sieved" through adsorbent media while the nitrogen passes through
the sieve unaffected. Pressure Swing Adsorption is particularly
beneficial because these systems can be scaled down to very small gas
flows.
Approximately 20% to 30% of the natural gas reserves in the U.S. contain
unacceptable amounts of nitrogen. Nitrogen is an inert gas and therefore
lowers the Btu value of natural gas. Nitrogen also takes up capacity in
natural gas pipelines that could be used for transporting natural gas.
"Pipeline Quality Gas"
specifications for nitrogen are variable from one pipeline company to
another, but generally, requires that nitrogen be no more than 4% of the
natural gas volume.
